Syphilis is on the rise in BC and gay men are the most at risk, says the BC Centre for Disease Control.

Dr Mark Gilbert says the number of syphilis cases has been growing in this province and other parts of North America since 2003.

Gilbert says about half the cases reported in BC are gay men, and two thirds of these men are HIV-positive.

"It's because [men with HIV] are seeking out other HIV-positive guys to have sex with," Gilbert says, explaining these men are less likely to use condoms since they're both positive.

Gilbert says it's important for gay and bisexual men, regardless of their HIV status, to wear condoms during sex as they reduce the risk of sexually transmitted illnesses (STIs). He emphasizes that STIs can also be transmitted through oral sex.

Regular testing is key to combat the epidemic, says Glyn Townson, chair of the BC Persons with AIDS Society.

"If you're having sex with multiple partners —and it isn't safe sex —it's quite likely you will come down with syphilis at this time," he says.

Syphilis is easily treated, but if left unchecked can cause loss of hearing, loss of vision, stroke or death.

Reality check!
In many ways over and over again; sodomites are being told and repetitively insisted upon... the practice of anal sexual intercourse and the promiscuity of their life styles; is up most sinful, but as well, it carries many illnesses and which are easily preventable and avoidable by simply stopping what they do. A single female partner, which the whole world recognizes as a wife or husband, particularly when God blesses that union is the only way to prevent the diffusion of these illnesses. Illnesses that expose the rest of the world because sodomites do not go around telling what they do when they engage in relations with straight people and thereby, blood infections and AIDS become rampant and impossible to research. The plead that because it is getting 'gay' people, which more clearly put should read sodomites; are being affected is nothing but a wash of a much needed reality check that neither the sodomites neither a cowardly hidden media want to accept, recognize and address but simply ignore and distract with tremendous amounts of resources otherwise available to address other illnesses like cancer and diabetes; which certainly can be fought in more fair grounds than protecting a life style wrong in every conception to start with.
