HOMOPHOBIA / Homophobic harassment at opening ceremonies rehearsal left unaddressed, he says

A gay Vancouver man wants to know what the Olympic organizing committee is going to do about the 20-minute verbal and physical homophobic onslaught he endured at the Feb 8 opening ceremonies rehearsal.

Tyler Sheppard says he received no help from Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympics (VANOC) ushers, security or police.

Now, he says, he has seen a lawyer and is considering legal action against VANOC for failing to ensure the venue was safe.

He has also filed a report with the Vancouver Police Department.

Sheppard says a woman who incorrectly insisted he and his friends were sitting in her seats repeatedly called him and his friends "fucking faggots."

"My friends heard it. A lot of people heard it," Sheppard says. "It was demoralizing."

Sheppard says the abuse continued even after ushers determined Sheppard and his friends were in the right seats.

They were there to see a friend dance in the opening ceremonies. But the woman kept kicking their seats after they sat down, Sheppard says.

She even muttered insults in his ear during the singing of "O Canada," he alleges.

"She kicked me in the back with her foot which left a red mark," he says. "If I was a man doing this to a woman, there would have been repercussions. What I want is fairness.

"The Olympics are supposed to be for everyone," he says.

Sheppard is still waiting for somebody from VANOC to return his calls about the incident.

"(VANOC) is ultimately the one that's running the show. It falls on their liability," the 25-year-old commercial insurance agent says.

"No one gets to hit me — man or woman," he adds.

VANOC has a duty to ameliorate such situations, agrees David Eby of the BC Civil Liberties Association.

"It's weird that there are so many police officers everywhere, including inside the venues, that police weren't involved," Eby says.

What's more, he says, VANOC should be able track the woman through her seat number.

"He may be able to find the woman and sue her," Eby suggests.

VANOC declined to comment on the alleged incident.

The Vancouver Police Department confirms it has an assault report on an incident at BC Place but has no suspect.

The information has also been forwarded to the VPD Diversity Relations Section, says Const Anne Longley.

"If more information comes to light that would identify the person responsible for the assault, then their information/evidence would form part of the investigation to determine the motive for the assault," police said in a statement.

Sheppard says he has the woman's seat number. He also has a photograph of the woman and at least four witnesses to the alleged abuse.

He believes if VANOC and police want to find out who was issued the tickets for the woman's seat, they probably could.

In order to get into an Olympic venue, tickets must be scanned at exterior security screening points manned by Contemporary Security Canada and overseen by police officers. Ushers then check tickets again inside and direct people to their seats.

The VPD suggested Xtra West contact VANOC ticketing but did not comment on Sheppard having the seat number.

Sheppard says he gave an officer the number of the seat the woman was sitting in.

Sheppard adds that he attended the opening ceremonies rehearsal with a friend who arrived two weeks ago from Chile. The friend was not spared the woman's wrath either.

Sheppard says the woman grabbed the Chilean's bag and threw it. He told her to leave it alone.

Sheppard says the woman's response was to shriek, "I'm not crazy, you fucking immigrant. Go back to your country."

Sheppard admits he called the woman a "bitch," and told her if she did not stop the abuse he would defend himself.

He says his complaints to the usher did not result in security or police being called.

"They did nothing," he repeats.

"VANOC has done nothing."

Unacceptable
This is really disgusting. I can't believe there weren't any other audience members that tried to stop this woman.

Must have been...
...an American. Speaking from experience I've had several run ins with verbally abusive American tourists here in Vancouver. They seem to forget to leave their attitudes at the border.

Not just Americans
As a gay Canadian with many intelligent, generous American friends, both gay and straight, I find Jer's response to be jingoistic and offensive. Americans do not have a monopoly on idiots any more than Canadians have one on civility. An idiot is an idiot, regardless of nationality, gender, or sexual orientation. Let's not blur this issue with shallow nationalism

Unfortunate ...
It's unfortunate that this situation occurred but for him to blame VANOC is completely ridiculous. He's a big boy, stand up for yourself or remove yourself from the situation ... you can't expect the rest of the world to protect you. Blaming VANOC and the venue for this situation is just pathetic media manipulation. The resolution was in his hands yet he sat there like a child waiting for somebody else to solve it. You can ensure that if the situation had gotten physical it would have been dealt with by the venue staff swiftly. And before you start flaming my comments keep in mind that I'm a gay man, living in the west end who has witnessed both physical and verbal bashing and at no point did any of the victims blame the establishment they were in or the city.

Great stereotyping, Jer
I take offense to Jer's comment speculating that it was an American that committed a homophobic assault on a fellow spectator. There are plenty of rude Americans, I'll give Jer that. But to say what Jer did, is hypocritical. I don't know what's worse, yelling homophobic slurs to a stranger at the Olympics, or coming onto a gay Canadian blog site and slurring all Americans as rude, homophobic cretins. I think Jer, as a Canadian, proves to all that hatred, discrimination, and stereotype knows no nationality.

Hateful leftists
The Canadian queer loony leftists never miss a chance to spew their anti-American bile at every chance. There is nothing in the article that says the aggressor is American. And doesn't the poor poor victim have any gonads? If she kicked him in the back he should have punched her in the face.

loss for words
Why in the world did you not defend yourself? You could have at least tossed a drink at her or something. I would have rather been arrested for bashing her face in than be humiliated by such a nasty cunt. I really hate that this happened to you.

what a nasty cunt!!!
Ron and Anita are assholes for blaming the victims. As an American, I am not at all offended, or surprised, by the suggestion that we are homophobic and rude. Compared to Canadians, we are! Hope the police track the cunt down and let her get raped in prison!

VANOC had responsibility
If as it seems Sheppard tried to get help from the ushers and security at the stadium and didn't receive any then definitely VANOC is liable. Security at these events is supposed to be for everyone by denying Sheppard security services they by implication condoned the assault. Hopefully VANOC cooperates and the attacker gets charged.

No excuse for misogyny
Obviously, the stressful situation that Tyler was in might have even caused the Dalai Lama to call the homophobe a bitch--which is still wrong as Tyler seemed to have conceded in the article. But, in reference to DH's comment, we should all refrain from using the nasty word c*nt when describing her, or any woman for that matter.

misogyny my ass!
This is the kind of shit men are expected to put up with from neurotic self serving women who have the legal upperhand. This man would have gone to jail without question if he raised a hand to her. The only recourse is to pursue her in court, prove the case, and stick it to her financially. Of course, she only has a fraction of the accountability of a man, so be prepared for her to walk with the blessing of courts, juries and media.

Ignored because of the genfer assulting
under society's current ways, he couldn't have done anything to her lest the police arrest him for assult and then have the woman turn around and sue him for such even though she through the FIRST blows, the FIRST words and the FIRST harassment. that's my honest opinion on why this was ignored like it was. If it was a man harassing and hitting at him like that people would have payed more attention and the guy being harassed could have turned around and clocked him one and no one would have made a huge deal.

Dan, Nanaimo BC 02/19/10 10:18 PM EST Mark A. Field, Asheville North Carolina, USA 02/19/10 8:55 PM EST Dan and Mark hit it on the head. Women know this and abuse this all time (my friend says it just me but again, I was right). Even if security had come, everyone would have sided with the lady. Calling her a bitch only empowers her (think the song, Bitch by Meredith Brooks from 1995). Calling her a cunt is too good for her (remember the episode from Sex and the City about Charlotte and the Cunt Artist). The probably with equality in this case is that there is a double standard. Yes, women are equals in western societies but still viewed as weak so they have to be "protected." Check out a divorce case resolution as 99% of the time, men get the shaft (pun intended).

Misogyny and Homophobia
How lovely to see a male Texan, a male North Carolinian, and a male British Colombian supporting the stereotypes of males from their respective areas. Violence has no place in polite society, even if this "woman" sure as heck wasn't polite. I would've made sure to at least get a photo of her so I could find her and sue her ass. I applaud Mr. Sheppard's restraint in not beating the snot out of her; I can't say I would've taken the same high road, and I'm sure our lovely misogynist commentators wouldn't have, either.

Confidence
It's so easy for everyone to say that if THEY were the ones in the same situation, they would've stood up for themselves. But standing up for oneself requires confidence, and there's no easier way to undermine a person's confidence than by calling them a faggot.

I forgot to add...
I forgot to add one more point: Is it really a good idea to be encouraging a fight with a person who already has a problem with aggression and self-control? The victim in this case knew nothing about this woman. For all he knew, she was mentally ill or under the influence of substances and could've become even more violent had he 'stood up' for himself. You never know who you're dealing with, so it's best to exercise good judgment, which is what the victim in this case did.

It's your rights
WOW ! That woman is extremely lucky that it was this guy and not me that she was verbally & physically attacking because she would have been taken to the ground and held for security. It's in every persons right to protect themselves from harm. If someone has been asked to stop their abuse and they decide not to stop, it's your right to take further action to protect yourself.

i don't care
i don't give a rats ass i would have knocked that self centered women to the ground and thrown her down the damn stairs cause for 1 thing women have too much legal freedom rite now men can;t event lay 1 finger on a girl let alone talk back to them with out have in the law get involved and thats just mest up period cause if it was man vs man the law wouldn't care and the same with female vs female but if u get the oppisite gender involved the law defends the damn girls witch is mest up the guy should have been able to defend him self but no cause of the laws he coulding do a damn thing but take legal action but with my mental disabilities the courts would been on my side but then again they may not but i still would have knocked some teeth out and made her pass out befor i let them arest me cause for 1 she started it first with verbal harassment. 2 then she kicked him. that rite there has the grounds for self defense. 3 she through his freinds bag. thats counts as theift. 4 he had a photo and seat # of the whentch so that rite there was more than enough to get her in hand cuffs and put in jail for terrorism and the VANOC didn't do a damn thing about it. plus its there responsiblity for anything that happends prior to the lighting of the tortch, durring, and within 2 weeks affter the event so sense they didn't take action he could easly made it so Vancouver never hosts another olimpic game again for not takeing legal actions sence he was not a person living in Vancouver. and how would he u may be wondering easy make a big comotion in the united nations meating about what happend and how u will tell everyone u know why they shouldn't go to the olimpic that right there will cause hell and put VANOC under the microscope and have a huge envestigaion of why they didn't go after the women and that will make it extreamly hard for Vancouver to ever host another olimtic games for the at least the next 100 games witch will also put more stricked rules to folow during the games.
