A disaster week for both Jason Kenney and Egale
SOD'S OPERA / Recapping the week I spent yelling at my monitor

Watching the train wreck that is Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is hard enough — but the other, smaller self-immolation behind it has been every bit as gut-wrenching, if significantly less public.

For the most part, straight news sources have been taking snapshots of the Kenney disaster as it unfolded. Here's what the photos look like:

Photo one: Canadian Press (CP) breaks the news that Kenney's office struck three gay rights factoids from a pocket-sized guide to Canada for prospective immigrants. The tidbits made it clear that gay sex and gay marriage are legal here, and discrimination based on one's sexuality is illegal.

The initial CP story also reveals that bureaucrats made a last-ditch effort to get the gay content back into the guide. And since CP dug up this info through an access to information request, it's all documented.

Kenney's initial response, through an aide: The booklet, which is more than 60 pages long, can hardly be expected to be encyclopedic.

Implication:
Kenney doesn't think gay rights are important.

Photo two (archival): Helen Kennedy of Egale Canada tells reporters that she met with Kenney after the immigration guide's release in December. At the time, she complained about the lack of gay content in the book. She says Kenney insisted that the omission was an "oversight" and that gays would be included in the second printing.

Implication: Kenney is a weaselly, lying, two-faced jerk.

Photo three: Kenney sends out his assistant to imply that gay rights are not a Canadian value, but a Liberal Party value (which is charitable), and to poke Scott Brison in the eye with... Mackenzie King's Nazi sympathies? A shameful, childish rejoinder.

Implication: Kenney and his assistant are hyper-partisan hacks.

Photo four: Back on Parliament Hill, Kenney is asked about axing the gay rights facts from the booklet. He curtly tells a scrum, "I did no such thing" and turns tail, hiding in the Conservative caucus room. Reporters are left scratching their heads, since the access to information docs show otherwise.

Implication: Kenney is a coward.

Photo five: The excuses get wilder. His aide (the same one) says that Kenney's signature isn't on any of the CP documents. Oh, well that explains it! The workaholic, virginal minister doesn't read his own mail or make his own decisions!

Implication: Kenney is lazy, incompetent or illiterate (or a combination of the three).

Photo six: During Question Period, New Democrat Olivia Chow demands that Kenney explain himself. Kenney says he takes responsibility for what he's done, but doesn't explain what role he played in the decision. He's proud of the guide. He also doesn't apologize, presumably because he thinks he made the right decision.

In the end, Kenney has been so slimy, so spineless, that even the National Post called him out on it. To me that he's the very worst mix of partisan ideologue and sleazy, people-pleasing baby kisser. Please, will someone put Jason Kenney out of our misery? Fire him. It's time.

***

So that's the big train wreck.

But there's been another smaller, one-woman disaster.

Egale Canada has been riding the Kenney choo-choo for months. Helen Kennedy, Egale's only staffer, has a special interest in immigration issues. And she is one of the smartest queer advocates in the country when it comes to the topic. She has a thoughtful, thorough remedy for our sometimes arbitrary immigration and refugee system. She's also a politico, an ex-assistant to Olivia Chow and a former political candidate herself.

So, when the Kenney caboose went off the rails, Egale was like an unlucky passenger ejected in a fiery mass — and a week later, the hapless gay lobby group is still trying to put itself out. Seriously — that bad.

Her conversation — specifically, his statement that the omission was an "oversight" — is crucial. It flips Kenney's image from merely an ideological, knuckle-dragging social conservative (duh) to a lying, two-faced crap factory.

It's abundantly clear that Kenney doesn't care about the same things Egale does. It's abundantly clear that Kenney lied to Kennedy's face.

So why is she so equivocal in her comments? What makes her think that, after intentionally removing the gay info from the guide, they'd fix it in the second printing?

Kennedy told Xtra late last week that she had to "take him at his word."

No you don't! Jason Kenney lied to you. That pretty much means you shouldn't take anything he says at face value anymore. Instead, she's staked her reputation, and Egale's, on Kenney's next move.

With stories like this, it's no wonder Egale is getting a reputation as a blowhard, fart-catching, brand-mangling error machine.

All in all, last week Kenney and Kennedy earned neighbouring spots on my blacklist. What will happen this week?

Confused
So calling gay rights a Liberal Party value is "charitable" yet it's Kennedy the New Democrat who's "equivocal" in her dealings with Kenney. Okay.

Open Letter To Jason Kenney
Hon. Jason Kenney Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Ottawa, Ont. Mr. Kenney, Given your decision to excise queer Canadians from the Citizenship guide, I can only surmise that you share advisers on sexual orientation issues with Ugandan MP David Bahati who introduced the private members bill in that country that would see Queer Ugandans executed or imprisoned. As well, knowing a queer Ugandan and not reporting that person to authorities might result in a jail term for friends and family members. Humanitarian activists and noted democrats Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and Iran’s Ahmadinejad have both said that there are no gays in their countries. We in Canada have one, Mark Tewkesbery, it would appear. Fear of homosexuals makes for strange bedfellows indeed. Shame. I am respectfully asking that you step down or be dismissed as Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism and suggest that a queer MP replace you before we become tarred with the same brush as UGANDA, ZIMBABWE, IRAQ, IRAN and SAUDI ARABIA. You get the idea. Richard Blaquiere Woodstock N.B.

LOL
Your phrase describing Egale: "blowhard, fart-catching, brand-mangling error machine", with its links to supporting stories from the past, made me laugh out loud. Way to go, Marcus!

counter-productive comments
It's only when we stop to think how well respected Canada's achievements in Gay Rights are among the International Gay Community that it makes absolutely no sense for an eager-beaver reporter to use a popular gay Canadian newspaper to invalidate the campaigns and stature of Egale Canada with hateful counter-productive comments like these.

Ask not What Egale has done for U Lately
Terms like fart-catching are fun, but on the life-and-death issues such as the chronically-engendered brutality against gay men in Jamaica, Egale has been anything but submissive. It has spoken out and tried to raise awareness, and it has been creative to deploy such perceptually salient tactics as censorship to ahieve its end. I say, whatever gets people and governments talking is a good tactic. What if you were a gay man living in Turcs and Caicos before somebody motivated the British government to take a strong stand, step in and nullify that nation's draconian laws vis-à-vis same-sex behaviour with an order-in-council, after that island-nation's government refused to change them? You could have been put to death.

Let's talk about Egale
Thank you Marcus for telling it like it is. It takes courage to challenge Egale, because as usual, we are seeing the organization's "supporters" rush to denounce these criticisms as "hateful" and "counter-productive". You'd think they'd save those words for Jason Kenney instead of taking him "at his word". But Egale "supporters" are most vitriolic when they argue with critics in our own community, not the government. The most irritating response from Egale that is now becoming a trend is to respond to critics by taking credit for the achievements of other people, like cancelling the Elephant Man concert in Toronto. Perhaps it helps them raise funds in the short term by justifying their existence to their dwindling list of supporters, but in the long run it builds resentment in the community among the people who are doing the work on these issues.

what courage?
A Gay from Toronto you are delusional to say "It takes courage to challenge Egale" when they are not only being challenged from all sides but have also seen much bandwagon criticism from those who don't seem to know anything about them. How is joining the mob courageous? That's like saying its courageous to complain about the TTC these days. If anything those taking the unpopular view and being supportive of EGALE are showing more courage than those joining in the attack. By the way EGALE is not the enemy, they may be ineffective but that doesn't make them wrong or bad, criticizing them is one thing, saying they're as bad as Kenney is nothing but a mean spirited attack and completely untrue. McCann is more interested in getting a reaction than being fair and he's only repeating the same complaints that most everyone else has about EGALE the only difference is McCann seems to see them in league with the enemy instead of just mistaken, other than that he's just another on the anti-EGALE bandwagon, something that takes zero courage. If you want to see true courage read up on the gay activists in Uganda, now that takes one hell of a lot of courage, way more than jumping on the anti-EGALE bandwagon.

Egale is not evil
Hi Rich. Egale is not the enemy. I happen to think Helen Kennedy is a smart woman, especially when in it comes to immigration issues. All the same, Egale's response on this particular issue has been really embarrassing. No one -- least of all Helen at Egale -- should trust what comes out of Jason Kenney's mouth anymore, now that he's been shown to say one thing in private, and something else in public. The idea that Egale should take a wait-and-see approach on the immigration guide is so, so misguided. Yeah, Egale is not evil, but they are bumbling, and it's worth pointing out, since they've been the dominant gay voice on this issue in the mainstream media.

Gay Rights are Human Rights
Jason Kenney was told to modify the brochure so that it would present a Conservative image of Canada to immigrants. Hello Stephen "Subtle" Harper. He was equally told to duck the reporters in Ottawa. The Canadian Prime Minister has what he wanted, but the World knows full well that Gay Rights are "legally" Human Rights in Canada. Traincrash? What traincrash?? Now, let's give Egale a hand to stem the tide of homophobia in the public school system (schoolyard bullying in particular) and ponder the fact that derogatory remarks against LGBT persons are becoming more and more common in cyberspace social networks designed for our youth. So, where are human rights really being violated?

Support for Egale & for Helen
I believe people in our community need to focus on the real issue here-- Jason Kenney's incompetence or dishonesty. (I am not sure which it is, but for either one he needs to be fired.) As for Egale and Helen Kennedy, they need full support and encouragement from our whole community. There seems to be too many people complaining about mistakes or delayed action when, in fact, Helen is working overtime doing the work of several people-- some of whom are happy to spend their time in the bars and parties when there is work to be done.

We do need Egale and solidarity
Agreed. Helen is dancing as fast as she can. In a perfect world she would have been consulted before our historical victory ended up on the cutting-room floor. She wasn't. What else can she do but hope that Kenney will keep his word regarding the next edition of the brochure? This issue received quite a bit of coverage from CBC's "The Current". I didn't listen to all of it, but it's all there in the archives, and Mark Tewksbury (?) said himself that it's a real shame to omit this progressive attitude from a resumé of Canadian History because we are known throughout the world as a progressive and gay-friendly nation. Again, ideally, if Helen had members willing to pursue this issue and to see it coming the next time, we would be assured that this blunder would be corrected. But in my mind - and I may be wrong about this - a man who behaved the way Kenney did would surely be acting on the instructions of the Prime Minister so that it is unlikely that Steven Harper would fire a Minister for doing what he was told to do. We can hate the underhanded manner about this Party's shenanigans, but you know as well as I do that it makes no difference to the PM what we feel. There's no reason why he couldn't be proud of our achievement...except that, well, the man may quite possibly be homophobic, and clever enough to throw dust in our eyes while he's carrying out his agenda...leaving his mark on Canadian History. And the most frustrating thing is that there doesn't seem to be a way of getting rid of this Government. Expressing our discontent is the least we can do, but I wouldn't compare Helen to a trainwreck; and Kenney is more of the a little caboose than anything else.

EGALE
"in fact, Helen is working overtime doing the work of several people-" The only place I constantly hear that is on the Xtra comments pages but I've seen no evidence of it anywhere else. I wonder which rich neocon EGALE is going to honour with a Leadership Award this year?

What a gross series of attacks on Kennedy
Apparently a few winers want to spend all their time and energy attacking Helen Kennedy rather than focusing on the Harper government which seems intent, like all neo-con administrations, on undermining every progressive person, value and programme created with blood, sweat and tears in Canada. I am sure we can all agree that we need to be united if we are to have any hope of creating the kind of movement that will liberate LGBTQQI(etc.) people and finally remove Harper and his gay- and progressive-hating ilk from power. The substance of your argument is that Kennedy should never speak respectfully (she should just blow her top like you do) or even try to lobby a Minister of the Government (especially, when he does have the power to assist in special cases of discrimination, immigration and queer issues). While I may personally despise Jason Kenney and all his beliefs, I would never attack Helen Kennedy for trying to lobby in a respectful manner since she is trying to represent an organization with a history, constituency, and currency beyond that of the writer of this article who can mouth off without apparent consequence. What makes this really bad is that you equate Helen Kennedy lobbying and being respectful with the hateful policy and ideology of the Tories. That is going way too far and it is truly a disgrace for Xtra to be promoting half-truths and half-baked opinions when we need to get the facts and organize together for the Canada we want and deserve.

Yes, let's talk Egale & Helen Kennedy
David: I suppose by "respectful" lobbying you're referring to the virtual absence of lobbying on the part of Egale and Helen Kennedy. No doubt Helen's politeness has something to do with Egale's office space -- being donated, as it is, by conservative PR firm Navigator. She's not going to bite the hand that feeds her.
