BLOODY ATTACK. Rescuers attend to wounded after a bloody shooting at a gathering of queer youth in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Two gay youth are dead and several more are wounded after a masked gunman burst into a youth meeting at a gay community organization in Tel Aviv, Israel on Aug 1.

It happened at 10:40 pm local time at The Aguda near Nahmani St and Ahad Ha'am St. Eyewitnesses say a masked man burst into a meeting of the under-22 gay youth social group, spraying them with gunfire.

Dead are 26-year-old Nir Katz and 17-year-old Liz Tarbishi. Ten others remain in hospital, two in critical condition.

Within minutes of the attack, hundreds of members of Tel Aviv’s gay and lesbian communities rallied both at the scene and a few blocks away at the city’s Gay Community Centre in Meir Garden. They marched through the city and held vigil through the night (see raw video below).

"This is undoubtedly the worst incident targeting the gay community in Israel,” said openly gay Knesset member Nitzan Horowitz. “It has the characteristics of a hate crime, of someone who attacked to blindly strike out at every person on the spot.”

Israeli leaders including prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and president Shimon Peres condemned the attack.

SHOT DEAD. Nir Katz, 26, a counsellor for a gay youth group is among the dead.

Watch Haaretz and Jerusalem Post for up-to-the minute updates.

And from Jerusalem Post here and here.

In this report from Al Jazeera English the man identified as Mike Hamel is acutally openly gay Knesset member Nitzan Horowitz. Hamel, chair of The Aguda, is the last speaker in this vid.
It's worth noting also that several sources reported initially that the shooting happened in a "gay bar" or "gay club." The shooting did not happen in a nightclub or pub. Also, some media outlets say three people died at the scene, but there were two confirmed dead the day after the shooting.

Terrorism
I hope this is treated as the terrorist attack that it is. When you target youth with automatic weapons, this is no longer just a hate crime. It's terrorism.

noteworthy
Of course, if this had taken place in the Palestinian territories of Gaza or West Bank (which is pretty much impossible as Palestinian gays must remain closeted), there would be dancing in the streets. One more reason for Toronto's gay militants to remember that Israel is STILL the only state in the Mid East that upholds gay rights. No one knows yet who perpetrated the killings... but it would not be surprising if it were done by a Palestinian who felt he was hitting back at TWO "evils" at the same time. If ever East Jerusalem is given back to the Palestinians, it will be a sad day for Palestinian gays... who will need to flee their own people to find refuge with the Jews. A point worth remembering for next year's Gay Pride.

Homophobic murders do not justify racism
These tragic murders of LGBT youth should not be used as an excuse for racist comments. Ken from Paris France take note. You can find homophobic individuals from all walks of life in every country of the world. It wasn't so long ago that being gay was illegal here in Canada and the US. Certainly Canada has it's own fair share of gay bashings and murders. These shootings and your comments are clearly examples of hate and discrimination and neither are acceptable.

Take your racist bilge elsewhere, Ken
Actually, Ken you bigot, the very first report I read about the incident -- http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/reuters/090802/world/international_us_israel_shooting -- specifically stated: "A court order banned publication of details of the investigation, but police said the shooting was not an anti-Israeli attack by a Palestinian." So STFU.

United we Stand
At this time I would like to proclaim solidarity with our Jewish friends in standing together in reaction to this terrible tragedy. I have to say I can sympathize with Ken's views, because Islam, like conservatism, is an enemy of the gay community. Let us all remember who our friends are and who our enemies are, and let us choose our alliances appropriatly.

Gee, let's go for a visit, shall we?
Gee, only 46% of the population thinks we're deviants. Let's go for a visit shall we? http://mondoweiss.net/2009/08/maybe-israel-isnt-so-gay-friendly-after-all.html http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1105652.html

correction
Why is it bigoted to point out the obvious? If the Palestinians DO get East Jerusalem, the Palestinian gays will have to flee to West Jerusalem if they hope to be treated decently...Palestinian gays have already had to leave the West Bank and Gaza for Israel... This is simply FACT,... and the bigotry is not coming from me. It is well known that Hamas and Hezbollah are religiously oriented. Does anyone really believe that they are NOT homophobic? My earlier comment was not against Palestinian gays... it was really aimed at those in the Toronto militant left who create "Israeli apartheid week"... and those who forget that if we are going to have politics in the Gay Pride Parades... that their aim is a little skewered when it comes to supporting those who would effectively limit gay rights in ALL of Palestine (and Israel) if given the chance. Capisch? A little less reflex PC and more clear-headedness would go a long way in helping the situation -FOR GAYS. And just to set the record straight, I have supported a Palestinian homeland for as long as I can remember. That doesn't mean jumping on the "bash-Israel" bandwagon without admitting a few inconvenient truths about what a Palestinian state holds out for Palestinian gays...

Face it, Ken...
Ken, you have a *history* of posting blatantly bigoted anti-Muslim comments. You could do a lot worse than to emulate Ezra Nawi -- http://ukgaynews.org.uk/Archive/09/Aug/0703.htm -- oh, that's right, you ARE doing worse than that. (And, as Barry MacLeod points out above, so are about 46% of Nawi's fellow citizens.)
