Apartheid Week event targets Israel's gay-friendly branding
INTERNATIONAL / Campaign 'ignores the rampant homophobia,' says activist

Israel's gay-friendly marketing "ignores the rampant homophobia that goes on within the Israeli state," says activist Natalie Kouri-Towe.
(gayisrael.org.il)
Ever thought of vacationing in sunny Israel? Well, the back-story on the state repression and human rights abuses happening there might change your mind, says a member of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA).

As part of Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) events at Carleton University, three students hosted a panel discussion called "Queer-friendly, Multicultural, Green: Debunking Israel's Myths," looking at the contradictions behind an international campaign launched by the state of Israel to appeal to the world's progressively minded tourists.

"The rebranding campaign has been going on for a few years now. There have been considerable efforts by the Israeli state to, on the outside, give an impression of tolerance and [it being] a safe place for gay people, but internally there's a much different story going on," says Natalie Kouri-Towe, a PhD student in sociology and equity studies in education at the University of Toronto and a member of QuAIA.

"The execution of people in a gay and lesbian centre last fall was a huge shock internationally because people had imagined Israel as a haven of tolerance. [The rebranding campaign] ignores the rampant homophobia that goes on within the Israeli state... the kind of rampant homophobia that goes on in any kind of state where there's lots of conservatism. There are contradictions around this."

Take a tourism website like gayisrael.org.il for example. The site's home page shows a couple of happy, shirtless gay guys on a beach, embracing each other and laughing. Everything is *ahem* hunky dory here, right?

Don't be so sure, says Kouri-Towe.

"What's erased from these images is the massive amount of militarization in the state. But coming into Israel to be free to be gay is a seductive narrative to tell the public. The World Pride events of 2006, which were held in Jerusalem, had the theme 'Love Without Borders.' This marks a significant moment in Israel's campaign to reimagine itself through the lens of gay consumer culture," says Kouri-Towe.

EXPLORING ISRAEL

For all its conflict, contradiction and bloodshed, the country remains a bastion of gay liberation in Asia. It has also raised the ire of human rights activists around the world.

Sa'ar Nathaniel is a Jerusalem gay activist, entrepreneur and politician. He sat on Jerusalem city council in 2006 and was instrumental in the fight for annual gay pride marches in Jerusalem, previously forbidden by ultra-Orthodox elements in the city's government. He was simultaneously the proprietor of Sushan, a now-closed Jerusalem gay bar that hosted a tight community of gay Israelis and Palestinians.

"I am also a left-wing Israeli," says Nathaniel. "I really think we need to compromise about a Palestinian state next to Israel, and I'm ready to negotiate that East Jerusalem will be the capital. But I think a lot of people in Europe and North America don't see the conflict clearly. What happened in Gaza is terrible. But if Israel was simply open to all Palestinians the courts would not be able to defend me. Ask yourself about Hamas and its ideology about women, about gays and about Israel. For me Hamas and the ultra-Orthodox are more or less the same."

"The reality is that... Israel is one of the most bordered states in the world, where crossing in is heavily regulated. Palestinian people in particular — but also people who are considered to be from enemy countries — don't have access to flow in and out. 'Love Without Borders' for this pride event had this kind of ironic relationship to the fact that a lot of people were incapable of attending because the state won't allow it."

Shedding light on those contradictions is one of the main goals of annual IAW activities, which are happening in more than 40 cities around the world — including 16 cities in Canada. Ottawa's fourth annual IAW takes place March 1–5, and events are planned in larger centres, including Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

"Israeli Apartheid Week is meant to educate, inspire and grow the boycott, divestments and sanctions movement in Canada," says Dax D'Orazio, an organizer of Ottawa's IAW events and a member of Students Against Israeli Apartheid Carleton. "We had a tremendous turnout last year, and we're hoping to snowball that."

Last year's Ottawa IAW events were given widespread media attention after the administration at both Carleton University and Ottawa U banned the IAW 2009 poster, which depicted a missile being dropped on a child in a keffiyeh, who is holding a teddy bear. The military helicopter is marked "Israel" and the land under the child's feet is marked "Gaza Strip."

This year, the Ontario legislature has unanimously denounced IAW events after a motion to that effect was put forward by Thornhill Progressive Conservative MP Peter Shurman, who added that he sees IAW as a "thinly veiled campaign by those whose real agenda is to eradicate Israel entirely."

On Feb 24, an op-ed piece by Leonard Stern in the Ottawa Citizen stated that this annual event puts Israel in "the role of Jew among nations — singled-out, cursed and harassed."

"A criticism that does come up is 'Why are we singling out this state when there are atrocities happening all over the world?" says D'Orazio. "'One of the cornerstones of what we're doing is that we're answering a call that Palestinian civil society has echoed throughout the world. When you actually do something, that's when people get hostile."

If that's true, it's interesting that IAW started at the international level in 2005, and the rebranding of Israel as the newest, hottest gay tourist destination started gathering steam the next year.

"Sexuality is being used by the Israeli state more and more in its attempt to rebrand itself and [move away from] its image as a violent state. Maxim has run pinup photos of women of the Israeli army... These are young people who are... being fetishized in the context of their role as soldiers to try to make it more palatable and appealing to the general public."

In Toronto, a queer IAW event is planned for Thu, Mar 4, 7pm. "Coming Out Against Apartheid: Queer Solidarity Activism." OISE Auditorium, 252 Bloor St West. Hosted by Students Against Israeli Apartheid, a working group of OPIRG-Toronto.

Thinly-veiled racism
Israel is the only country in the Middle East with any gay rights at all under law, let alone a Gay Pride parade. Compare this with neighboring Egypt, where homosexuals are arrested and tortured. This is just a thin excuse to smear the Jewish people and their countru, Israel, despite it being the most gay-friendly country in that part of the world - bar none.

What do you expect from the loony left?
What do you expect from a leftist gutter rag like Xtra! ? The fact Israel is the only country in the middle east where a gay Canadian tourist could be openly gay is irrelevant to these lefty freaks. They only care that Israel is an ally to their arch-enemy the USA. All gay Canadian leftists should be forced to spend 6 months in Iran...I bet their love for Islamization would end quickly.

Israel is Queer Sanctuary!
Only Israel and Turkey provide sanctuary and relative safety for homosexuals in the middle east and the dominant islamic cultural states - the surronding nations around Israel advocate shariah law regarding homosexuality that dictates all homosexuals should be put to death. Israel is a sanctuary for the LGBTQ, and for the QuAIA to accuse otherwise openly screams that they are (willing?) ignorant about the open and encouraged persecution against LGBTQ by the neighboring islamic nations surrounding Israel.

Perfect the enemy of the good

By comparison with not only the rest of the Middle-East but the world at large, they're fairly progressive on LGBT rights. Same-sex marriages performed abroad are recognized, adaption is possible, gays can serve opnely in the IDF, there's non-discrimination statutes, the former PM's daughter is a lesbian and attitudes in general are lax towards this subject. It's not perfect, but it's okay, and considering where a lot of countries are, okay's a start. Using the attack on the LGBT centre as an example of how homophobic the state of Israel is seems very sleazy to me. That attack was a hate-crime, one that was strongly condemned by Israeli society and government. If anyone were caught planning something similar, they'd face tough legal sanctions, not support. By Ms Kouri-Towe's logic, the Canadian government should somehow be seen as complicit in the Dawson College shooting because...it happened in Canada.

uninformed writer or plain hater?
I wonder why Israel, world known "apartheid" (and now homophobic according to this article) country would be a refuge for gay palestinians. I mean, according to you we hate palestinians and we hate gays, so does this make any sense? "A number of gay Palestinian men are risking their lives to cross the border into Israel, claiming they feel safer among Israelis than their own people." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/3211772.stm or how about this...from those hateful religious intolerant extremists... "Young Palestinian man who lives with his partner in Israel visits his parents in West Bank. Residents of his villages threaten to kill him. Rescue comes from unexpected source: Religious Jewish settler who agreed to hide him in settlement" http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3796682,00.html Must be just propaganda. But wait... "JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel has granted a Palestinian a rare residency permit after the man, who is gay, said his sexuality put his life in danger in the West Bank, a Defence Ministry official said on Tuesday." http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKL2586865820080325 Hmmm I see a pattern here...yes...its all lies by the zionist controlled press isnt it? yes, it must be...those apartheid homophobic zionists...lets extend apartheid week to a full month just to highlight the issue...and while we are at it, lets celebrate freedom of speech, universal right to vote and gender equality in the arab world...yes, that will show those zionist settlers!

misguided
While I don't support the actions of Israel in the occupied territories and firmly believe that the way to peace is through the dismantling of the settlements and the formation of an independent Palestinian state I find it hard to see this writer's criticism of Israel's treatment of gays and lesbians as anything other than misguided. Its true that further advances in equality rights are needed in Israel but considering all that they're up against in terms of social conservatism and the religious right wing in Israel and its status as a religion based state even if not actually theocratic like Iran, they have achieved quite a bit of equality thanks to the powerful influence of their left wing. However just because its much worse for gays and lesbians in the rest of the middle east doesn't mean Israel shouldn't face criticism for its lack of full legal equality, just because its better than its neighbours is no reason for Israeli LGBT folk to settle for less than full legal equality. I think the same is true of Canada too, just because we do have full legal equality is no reason for us not to push for full social equality too regardless of the fact we have it much better here than our neighbours in the US do. As for ron's statement about left leaning folks being forced to live in Iran for 6 months I just want to point out that at his level of social conservatism and xenophobia he'd likely feel right at home in a repressive state like Iran, social repression is the natural outcome of social conservatism being the law of the land like ron so dearly hopes for Canada. It was the left wing that fought for and gained us our equality rights that ron benefits from even though he considers the left now to be the worst of the worst in Canada yet without a strong left wing gay sex would likely still be illegal and we'd certainly have no protection from discrimination or the right to marry. Social conservative gays should be very grateful for a strong left wing in Canada.

Apartheid Week is a bloody joke
I don't know why any self-respecting queer person would stand in solidarity with arab nationalism and muslim hegemony. Israel Apartheid Week is an overtly anti-Jew, pro-muslim event, with a few misguided lefties who get caught in the crossfire. A couple years ago at McMaster the Anti-Apartheid people came by the busload to chant anti-semetic war cries and call for the end of Israel. A real disgrace. Israel is the ONLY safe-haven for queer people across the Middle East. Not like Toronto no, but a hell of alot better than Gaza, Egypt, Syria, and beyond where gay people are executed.

Little Understanding of the Issue
Ryan, your comments show your ignorance on the issues. ..."arab nationalism and muslim hegemony"?? which misguided right wing facsist are you quoting from? Israeli Apartheid Week has little to do with religion. It is a political movement. The South African government calls the Israeli treatment of Palestine apartheid. http://www.hsrc.ac.za/Document-3227.phtml In South Africa apartheid was forced to an end by the same means - boycott, divestment and sanctions. Read up on Naomi Klein, one of your so called "misguided lefties". Turkey, Beirut(Lebanon), and Amman (Jordan)are all making progress on gay rights.

Re: Little Understanding of the Issue
Yes J Roman I am familiar with the work of Noami Klein as well as the word politics of apartheid. My point had to do with the Euro-North American (largely student) movement against 'Israel Apartheid'. And when you would call me a 'right wing fascist' in your first line, I don't feel like apologizing for saying 'misguided lefties'. As an observant of several Israel Apartheid demonstrations over the years, I can firmly state that the make-up of these groups are indeed politically aligned muslims and misguided lefties. Relgion is NOT separate from the issue at hand. Apartheid is a convenient buzzword to get off the hook for openly condemning Israel and its right to exist altogether. Something about hearing people chant "Viva Viva Intifata" kind of gives that away.

confused
Ryan I've worked in the building at York U (Vari Hall) where a lot of Apartheid Week info and most demonstrations concerning the issue over the years happened,I've spent a huge chunk of my workday in the midst of pro-Palestinian demos and Apartheid Week info when they were happening and never once did I hear anyone speak about Israel's right to exist, they were strictly focused on the issue at hand, namely Israel's treatment of the Palestinian people in the occupied territories and its unequal treatment of Israeli Arab Muslims. That is the only issue I have ever seen discussed at such events. All the other issues like denying Israel's right to exist I've only heard mentioned by the right wing anti-Palestine crowd trying to confuse and muddy the issue, quite well actually since it prevents the Israeli apartheid group from effectively getting their message out. Also I believe it would help the peace process if Israel recognized the right of Palestine to exist which I'm almost certain they haven't done which has been shown by their constant settlement building on land that's supposed to be a part of a future independent Palestinian state, chop it up into so many small pieces and it will no longer be viable as a state which to me seems to be the point of settlement building and resisting doing anything which might lead to peace since the longer the war the more land for Israel and the smaller the Palestinian state if one will be at all. Also "Viva Viva Intifata" would translate more as long live the resistance than destroy Israel or anything like that, they are being occupied by a foreign power for a very long time now, resistance is to be expected though of course I don't agree with some of the tactics of some Palestinians, specically terrorism targeting Israeli citizens. However that doesn't justify Israel's treatment of Palestinians or their policies concerning the West Bank and Gaza and demanding better of Israel is not the same as calling for thei

Quite biased
The hate people have towards Israel tends to blindfold them quite alot. I can say that Israeli society in general is not homophobic. Sure, we still have to fight for more rights (just like LGBTQ communities in other western states) and we still have to fight some homophobia (which exists in places like Canada and the Netherlands as well, because there will always be people who are afraid to accept other people). But society is very tolerant in general. I'm glad I can live with my boyfriend, have a civil partnership with him and go hand in hand down the street without being afraid (try this in Gaza, why don't you). I also wish there would be a Palestinian state. Please! We've had enough.Does anyone attending this apartheid week ever question the Palestinian's refusal to accept Israel? Did anyone ever ask why they didn't do it in 48 or until 67 or on any other occasion they had the chance to. And by the way, yes, people from countries which are considered enemy-states cannot go into Israel, but Israelis also cannot go to these countries.

What is stopping QuAIA from holding events in Gaza, West Bank, Iran, Egypt, or any Arab Country is it that Homosexual acts are banned in these countries and to a point were Gay Palestinians are forced to live in Israel or here's a good point maybe the QuAIA should tell that to Gay Palestinians living in Israel? I could only wonder on how they would react to this story telling of Israel not being Gay friendly??? So what is stopping them??? I Wonder??

Hot air. Smells bad too.
"A criticism ... is 'Why are we singling out [Israel]when there are atrocities happening all over the world?" says D'Orazio. "One of the cornerstones of what we're doing is that we're answering a call that Palestinian civil society has echoed throughout the world. When you actually do something, that's when people get hostile." Clearly, D'Orazio does not have an answer to the rhetorical question he poses. His response says nothing to answer this vital issue. It is pure hot air. The true answer is of course that such anti-Israel sentiment - ignoring the Ugandas, North Koreas and Pakistans of our world, to mention only a few - is nothing but veiled vile racist anti-Semitism. And there is no "Palestinian civil society". Palestinian society murders gay men, which is why they flee to safety in Israel when they are outed. In Israel they are safe, often given refuge, allowed to stay and work.
