Gay MP's Christmas card riles homophobic Globe readers

Liberal MP Scott Brison's Christmas card is making some headlines after the Globe's Jane Taber blogged about it yesterday. She calls it the "first same-sex married couple MP Christmas card."

Maxime St Pierre and Brison pose on their Nova Scotia property with their dog Simba.

Taber wrote that the "Liberal MP says the card has gone out throughout the rural riding. And there have been no negative comments or raised eyebrows."

Heartwarming.

But then the Globe posted this message below Taber's blog post: "Comments have been closed due to an overwhelming number of hateful and homophobic remarks. We appreciate that readers want to discuss this issue, but we can't allow our site to become a platform for intolerance."

Urgh. As Xtra's federal politics blogger Dale Smith notes, "Seriously? In Canada in 2009? You’d think that people would get over it by now."

It's too bad the Globe didn't leave the comments open. Homophobic wingnuts only remind us how much work we still have to do. It would be better to challenge their bigotry with counter-arguments, rather than shutting down the whole discussion.

And really, Brison's card isn't even very gay. It's a lovely photo, but there's such a distance between the two men that they could almost be mistaken for brothers.

I haven't seen her Christmas cards yet, but I'm hoping Liberal MP Hedy Fry can challenge Brison for the gayest Christmas card of 2009. It's probably too late, but may I suggest this fabulous photo? (That's her in red)

UPDATE, OCT 18: The Canadian Press picked up on the Brison story yesterday afternoon, and they spoke to Matt Mills, editorial director of Pink Triangle Press. Mills said it's a mistake to censor homophobes, as it just drives homophobia underground and out of the public eye.

Curiously, when the Toronto Star re-ran the Canadian Press piece, they removed Mills' comments. Weird. The CBC, the Chronicle Herald and CTV also re-ran the Canadian Press story, but they kept Mills' comments.

Let me be the first to say on this website, since the Globe closed their comments, that Messrs. St. Pierre and Brison and their card look happy and beautiful and my husband I would have been delighted to receive this card from them.

It makes you wonder if under Conservative PM, Stephen Harper, these people feel empowered to speak out. The PM sets the tone for what is socially acceptable in the Country,

I agree totally with these comments and those of Matt Mills; and I know it's truly awful to feel as though we're being pushed back in time, back to those dark days when we were forced to assume that most of the population hated us...but as I looked at the Brisons' innocent photo and read Taber's piece and the Globe's shocking remarks at the end, I found myself with no choice but to collapse into laughter: What a silly fantasy it was to think that all Canadians would suddenly respect us just because we fought for and won the right to get married! But, hey, I still have a thick skin from a lifetime of fighting for equal rights, and I'm not about to stop anytime soon, no matter how much hate is dished out. As if! Ted Kennedy said it best: "The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream will never die."

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. Surely in 2009 in the 21st century, a gay Christmas card depicting a publically elected MP, his partner and their dog shouldn't cause any grief. It only goes to show what kind of hicks must live in Mr. Brison's riding. I don't know how the folks down on the farm would have reacted if they were holding hands! Come on, people! Get your nose out of the Old Testament and wake up to the real world!!

I often despair that our community has become complacent and that we can't see outside our big Toronto bubble. This simple Christmas card should be a stark eye opener to those who think we can all relax now. Kudos to Matt Mills for his stance. You absolutely cannot fight what you cannot see.

It is hard to believe that this lovely couple have been subject to intolerance. I wrote an article about their beautiful Christmas card and this article has been subject to homophobic comments as well. I have chosen not to moderate the comments because afterall it is a free country...like it or not www.examiner.com/x-28391-Vancouver-Gay--Lesbian-Issues-Examiner~y2009m12d19-Gay-or-Nay

Can't see AIDS, can fight AIDS. Can't see complacency, can fight complacency. Peter Bochove has worshipped at the altar of Kyle Rae and his Liberal friends for years now - not that he has to open his lips that widely to accommodate those little dwarf cocks.

And Kieran, could well say that about your comments on mass mailing, you hypocrite.
