LPGA votes to allow trans golfers

The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) voted last night to remove its "female at birth" clause in a bid to allow transgender membership.

The bylaw change was a direct response to a lawsuit filed against the LPGA by 57-year-old Lana Lawless, a championship-winning golfer, who sued the association, claiming the "female at birth" clause violates California civil rights law.

Lawless, a retired police officer who underwent gender-reassignment surgery in 2005, released a statement in October about her lawsuit:

"I have traveled a long road to get to where I am now, a place where I always belonged as a strong, proud, capable woman. I am, in all respects, legally, and physically female. The State of California recognizes me as such and the LPGA should not be permitted to come into California and blatantly violate my rights. I just want to have the same opportunity to play professional golf as any other woman."

The International Olympic Committee, the US Golf Association and the British Ladies Golf Union have already amended their bylaws to allow transgender participation.

Anti-homophobia poster too hot for Quebec's Videotron

Ah, hockey. Canada's favourite sport is no stranger to these pages! Remember when rightwing Christian groups were outraged that the Maple Leafs allowed their logo to be used in a gay hockey film? Yikes.

Let's add another story to Xtra's "hockey hall of shame," shall we?

Videotron, a subsidiary of Quebecor Media, has reportedly removed an anti-homophobia poster from its Quebec City office. The timing isn't great because... well, it's never a great time to rip down anti-homophobia posters. But Monday, May 17, is International Day Against Homophobia!

According to La Soleil, company management decided to yank the poster from a union bulletin board after receiving three complaints from employees. That's all it takes? Three complaints?

Management have been asked to put the poster back up, but they have not done so, says Bruno Tremblay of the Canadian Union of Public Employees

A Videotron spokesperson told Canoe that the bulletin board can only be used for union news, so management had no choice but to remove the poster. Which begs the question: why not just move the poster to another wall?

The yanked poster is part of a series aimed at fighting homophobia in sports. Take a look at the full-size version of the image -- their lips are barely touching!

Some of the other posters in the campaign are... frankly, not very gay at all. Take a peek:

Watch: Brendan Burke talks about homophobia and hockey

Brendan Burke made waves in the sports world when he publicly came out this week. The 20-year-old son of Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke has reignited a national discussion on homophobia in sports.

TSN spoke to Brendan Burke and his father this week. "Things like gay slurs... I think once players realize that there could be a gay person next to them or that there are gay people around them — they'll stop using it," says Brendan Burke.

Watch the TSN segment below:

The Globe & Mail spoke with Brendan Burke for an interview -- read it here.

Meanwhile, check out the comments on the original ESPN article that broke Brendan Burke's coming-out story. TSN responds to viewer reactions to the Burke interview.

Daily Roundup: The jocks are getting it

No, not like that -- it's the way organized sports, that last great bastion of authorized homophobia, is finally joining the 21st century.

The immediate and disapproving reaction to NFL player Larry Johnson's frankly ordinary spurt of anti-gay taunting last week was a real surprise and it's been hilarious watching his tap-dancing lawyer now claim they had no idea the word "faggot" was offensive (umm, Johnson meant it as an insult, dude).

And now we have NBA athlete Drew Gooden in trouble for using the same slur against a fan in LA and, best of all, a Danish soccer team actually firing a virulently homophobic player.  Did someone put Ecstacy in the Gatorade?

But what really feels like a sea change in sports is the open letter from NHL player Justin Bourne condemning homophobia in hockey. He writes in USA Today:

"It's time to acknowledge we've been unfair to the gay community, that the culture of our sport can be misogynistic, homophobic and cruel. More important, it's time to make a stand that we want it to change."

Amen, brother! Bourne is now in my own personal Hockey Hall of Fame.  I'm so happy about such long-awaited evolution that I won't even be churlish enough to mention that, in all the hooplah over the Ultimate Fighting Championship's newfound love for its gay fans, Xtra's own Josh Levy wrote about it back in July.

Nah...that just wouldn't be sporting!

Daily Roundup: The homophobes are right

However homophobic he may be, I have to agree with boxer Bernard Hopkins:

It's hard to argue with the man when your average Ultimate Fighting Championship match looks like this:

It's unnerving to find oneself agreeing with homophobes.  Remember the Florida man who campaigned against a transgender rights bill because it would lead to men invading women's bathrooms?  Turns out he was right!

And, of course, there's a lot of buzz surrounding the Catholic Church's surprise welcome to conservative Anglicans but I'll admit I'm delighted.  It's a marketing miracle!  Once all the misogynist, homophobic Anglicans are assimilated into the Pope's collective, the Anglican Church can then move on in peace -- treating women as equals and welcoming gays and lesbians into their congregations -- while the Catholic Church will be free to continue shrieking against the modern world like in this loathsome screed from Catholic League president Bill Donohue

As always, the brilliant John Shelby Spong has the right idea but Donohue does have this entirely accurate bit:

"The culture war is up for grabs. The good news is that religious conservatives continue to breed like rabbits, while secular saboteurs have shut down: they're too busy walking their dogs, going to bathhouses and aborting their kids. Time, it seems, is on the side of the angels."

That's right -- legs in the air, ladies!  You've got babies to churn out!  But just for the record, while I've visited bathhouses and walk my dog daily, I've never aborted a kid (I thought that would've been obvious, Bill!) and I do fear that he's right -- it's hard for two gay men and a terrier to compete with Jon and Kate Plus Eight.

Fortunately though, even if I can see the point of view of homophobic boxers and priests, I'll always have The Globe and Mail's Margaret Wente (and her ridiculous new book cover) to disagree with!
