Tribalest of froshes: part deux

Ossie Michelin, a fellow journalist, friend and person of native ancestry, had this to say:

I don't think I'll be doing a story on this one any more now that they've changed the theme and apologized for it on their website. One of the problems with being an aboriginal people is that you're looked upon as some sort of mythical creatures that don't exist anymore, you know like unicorns or red tories, so it's ok to apropriate culture because in the minds of many we stop existing when the Europeans built their cities.

That being said I would love to see people apropriate red tory culture: yay social programs and small government!

McGill frosh organizers resort to racial typecasting

Reports from the back-to-school frosh tours as students trickle into the city are starting to come in. Edward Lee says it best. He writes:

"The folks in management decided to do their frosh by doing 'tribal' themes, including, Inca, Maori, etc tribes... while this may seem innocent on the surface, you can imagine what kinds of activities you would end up doing when using this kind of theme (ie 'tribal' team cheer, etc). I mean, if it were other kinds of racially or culturally based tribes (ie asian, black, white or muslim versus jewish, etc), it would not have been okay, so why would creating 'tribes' related to Indigenous groups (especially present-day communities like the Maori) be okay? Plus many, if not most Indigenous communities across this country would never even use the word 'tribe' to describe themselves or their particular community."

Anybody with more info on this should speak up!

I never much cared for Froshers. Or McGill. In University, (Concordia BA '07), I always felt a little tension among McGillites and Concordians. Usually at parties after a kegger or two. But yeah, they suck.

OH BOY OH BOY OH RENTBOY

Well, he's a fraud and a homophobe, even if he is telling the truth about hiring a luggage carrier for his OUTING in and around EUROPE. The NY Times' Frank Rich runs it down for Rekers -- point by devastatingly cutting point:

"Thanks to Rekers’s clownish public exposure, we now know that his professional judgments are windows into his cracked psyche, not gay people’s. But there is nothing funny about the destruction his writings and public activities have sown. His fringe views have not remained on the fringe. His excursions into public policy have had real and damaging consequences on a large swath of Americans."

Can homos be homophobic? Yes, they hate themselves and so therefore all other gay things too. Thoughts? Don't care? Care? Comment below.

*(Warning, do not type "rentboy" into Google with the Safe Search OFF. Unless you want to see lots of appendages. In that case, go nuts!)

Briefs: Monday, Dec 28

I was in Ottawa and Gatineau this holiday, and had such a relaxing time. I bought awesome books (Zoe Whittall's For As Long As Possible and Margaret Atwood's The Year of the Flood). Also went to the Lookout, one of Ottawa's oldest gay bars, where people were funny, sexy and all around dope.

What is everyone doing for NYE 2010? I haven't decided, though it won't be a big event. Probably some cider and whisky with some friends, snow, and hopefully, a dog or two. Some good stuff happening in the city tho, for cheap. Check out the parties here. [Kox & Kuntz]

Apparently, gay teenage girls can be expelled from religious schools for "homosexual behaviour" because religious schools are considered private property and so the expulsion does not fall under the jurisdiction of human rights violation. [LA Times]

A transsexual undergoing a year-long transition to her true self, Jillian Page, writes about the illusive G-Spot over at Montreal Gazette. [Patent Pending]
